Leaning over the table in the barn, I look at Grayson’s blueprints as some of the crew saw pieces of wood. Olive Owl is getting another expansion, this time a small building that will be Kelsey’s spa. I guess wine and spas go hand in hand, and they’ve talked about it for years.

Grayson throws a pencil. “The delivery for more wood is delayed.”

“That’s not a problem, we can just go ahead and lay cement for this corner room.” I point onto the paper.

“You’re going to put us ahead of schedule again,” he muses.

Scratching the back of my neck, I try to suppress my pride as I notice Grayson look behind me, and quickly I turn.

No fucking way.

She really wants to send me under.

Lucy is walking toward us with a bright smile, a ponytail that sways with her stride, a short, light green summer dress that leaves little to the imagination, and she’s carrying a small cooler. “Thought I would bring lunch to my favorite people.”

I must be standing there with a dumbfounded look, while Grayson is happy as a clam and reaches out to grab the lunch supplies. “Wow, lucky us. Did you make this or did my wife play a role?”

Lucy pretends to be offended. “All me, thank you very much. By the way, Brooke wanted me to remind you to pick up Rosie from her summer ballet camp. It finishes at 2.”

Grayson grabs a foil-wrapped sandwich and looks at his watch. “Yikes, I need to get moving then. I’ll be back after. Hold down the fort, okay.” He points to me before heading off without a thought.

I look at Lucy as I lean against the table, completely onto her tricks. “Let me guess, you timed it so he would leave us?”

“Guilty. Now, is it your lunch break or not?” She looks around to see that nobody is taking much notice of us.

What the hell, here I go again.

“Come on, let’s go find some shade,” I suggest.

Ten minutes later, we’re sitting under a tree near the Olive Owl property line, and there’s enough shade to keep us cool on this scorching day.

I now fully examine the contents of the cooler. “Really going for persuasion, huh?” I raise my brows at her when I spot a bottle of ranch dressing and a Tupperware filled with cut veggies.

“I think I’ve come to learn that you have no spine when it comes to me. No persuasion needed. Instead, I just wanted to bring your favorites.” She leans back on her arms with a water bottle in one hand.

I take one of the foiled chicken wraps she made and get comfortable next to her.

“Keeping busy other than being a pain in my ass?” I ask her, as I wonder what she’s up to during the day since she doesn’t have a job, nor is she studying.

She wobbles her head in consideration. “I slept in, and truthfully it felt so good to just… sleep. Waking and knowing I’m not rushed to finish a paper or need to focus on a to-do list is what I needed.
